From Dave's obituary:

“Dave was a gifted athlete who participated in state play offs and championships in both baseball and basketball. He earned the elite Ram Scholar-Athlete award his senior year at Millikan. At Long Beach City College, under the coaching of Lute Olson, he and his outstanding teammates won the California State Basketball Championship. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, pitched for the California Angels and finished his professional baseball career with the Kansas City Royals.”
