Hodge and I knew each other since first grade at St. Cornelius. I still have an incredibly clear memory of Hodge in first grade during a time we were rhyming words prompted by our teacher. However, it was years later at Marshall Jr. High that we became the best of friends when he transferred over mid-year. We rode bikes everywhere; we jumped the chain link fence on Clark to golf at Sky Links playing holes over and over which were out of sight from the clubhouse. We never got caught. During the summers we hitchhiked to Seal Beach nearly every day to hang out with friends, body surf, get arrested, (once) smoke cigarettes, and fish. We often fished overnight on Belmont Pier for sharks and stingrays while listening to Wolfman Jack on AM radio. We also played in a band, Hodge singing lead and me on the drums. Well, we practiced a lot together and played a couple of battles of the bands in parks. And, we hung out--oh the lost art of hanging out.

The summer we were heading to Millikan I met a group of friends, mostly from Lakewood, (boo) and Hodge and I saw very little of each other after that, even at Millikan. Decades later, when Hodge first joined Facebook, we instant messaged  then got on the phone and talked. He had been in Hawaii for decades and had his own landscaping business. The Hodge I knew seemed perfectly suited for a laid-back life in Hawaii, I’m glad he found it.

Rest in peace, Hodge.
